The first annual Recharge Road Mile at Jackson’s Corner Eastside was a blast! Even though it turned out to be a chilly and windy fall day, that didn’t stop everyone from having fun and running fast times. We had a small but fast group that produced exciting races on both the elite men’s and women’s fields. We also had some great times ran by our age group racers! Check out the full results at the bottom of the page and watch the cool video to see the race unfold!
Our top three racers had an intense battle all the way to the line with Thomas Morgan crossing first followed shortly by Ryan Bak then Jared Bassett in blazing fast times of 4:31, 4:33, and 4:34. Thomas Morgan is an Olympic Trials qualifier with a personal best of 13:27 for 5k, and he showed his race savvy over the home stretch where position became key in the men’s race. Competition was fierce going into the final turns with pro-runners Jared Bassett and Ryan Bak jockeying for position, but Thomas navigated the turns and put on the last burst of speed to clinch the victory!
Not to be outdone by her husband, Allison Grace Morgan ran an aggressive but smart race to capture the title on the women’s side in a time of 5:04. Her strength as a 10,000m Olympic Trials qualifier helped her finish strong after the kamikaze pace the first 400m. It was a battle of attrition from there. Cam Mayfield moved up throughout the race, crossing the finish line in second with a time of 5:12. Charlotte Browning of Eugene, who set the blazing fast pace, hung tough for third with a time of 5:14. Charlotte is a two-time NCAA champion and Olympic Trials qualifier in the 1500m. She will definitely be one to watch in the future!
Our Master’s Champions were Gary Bridwell in a time of 7:14 and Ellen Kramer in a time of 5:55. Also, a special shoutout goes to Rob Russell, who came out and ran a time of 5:01 after winning the Mountain Lakes 100 miler last weekend! What studs!
After the race, everyone gathered inside Jackson’s for the awards ceremony that featured cash prizes, prizes from Picky Bars, Recharge and Jackson’s Corner gift certificates, and much more! All the participants enjoyed free Deschutes Beer, great food from Jackson’s Corner, and awesome live music from local band Popcorn Sugar. The weather prevented a previously planned corn hole tournament, but all of the racers seemed to be content with sipping delicious beer while staying inside where it was warm to chat about the race and make plans for next year.
Thanks to everyone who helped make our first Recharge Road Mile a success! We plan on making this race an annual event and expect it to grow in numbers and talent. Be sure to be there next year! #bringbackthemile
